Repaving in works on Salbide Avenue
by Celia Shortt
Salbide Avenue near Newnan Presbyterian Church at the south end of the downtown Newnan business district has been under repair. The portion of Salbide east of Greenville street was milled to remove thick layers of old paving, and the sidewalks are being replaced.
Paving work in the area began Tuesday afternoon.
At the July 23 Newnan City Council meeting, Councilman Bob Coggin asked the council to mill that portion of the street. The roadway was higher than the curb in some places because it has been re-layered so many times. After a heavy rainfall, water would run under the door and into the church.
“It’s doing a lot of damage inside the church,” said Coggin.
The Newnan City Council unanimously approved the $20,000, coming from the 2007 Special Local Option Sales Tax fund, for the repairs.
