Murder victim's sister commits suicide
A Carrollton teenager whose sister's 2004 murder was at the center of a controversial case has committed suicide.
Authorities say Danielle Yates, 16, jumped from a parking deck across from the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center Tuesday, according to the Carroll County Times-Georgian, which withheld the girl's name.
Capt. Chris Dobbs of the Carrollton Police Department told the Times-Georgian that Yates was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Atlanta, where she was treated for "some pretty bad injuries." She was taken off life support and died Thursday night, according to friends.
Dobbs said the girl had been going through "some rough times" with her family.
Danielle Yates was 7 when her sister, 8-year-old Amy, was found murdered after going out to ride her bicycle in the Carrollton trailer park where her family lived. A teenage neighbor, Johnathan Adams, was convicted of her death in 2005. However, he was exonerated after the confession of a mentally disabled teen, Chris Gossett, nearly two years after the crime.
Charges against Gossett were dropped in 2010 and the crime remains unsolved.
