Senoia City Councilman Larry Owens will be running for mayor.

Owens, who has served on the council for 11 years, will be running to replace Mayor Robert Belisle, who is not seeking re-election. That leaves Owens’ seat on the Senoia City Council open.

Qualifying for Senoia City Council, as well as city elections in Newnan, Grantville, Turin, Haralson, Sharpsburg and Moreland will be Monday through Wednesday.

Qualifying is 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

In Senoia, the qualifying fee is $360 for the mayor's seat and $90 for council. The two council seats that are up are Owens' Post 1 and the Post 2 seat held by Jeffrey Fisher.

Qualifying for Senoia is held at Senoia City Hall.

New this year in Senoia, council candidates will qualify for a specific post. Previously, all council candidates ran together, voters chose two, and the seats went to the top two vote getters.

Owens said that, with Belisle not seeking re-election, "I felt like the new mayor should come from within the council.

"This is something that I wanted to do and I would like to use my past 11 years of experience serving the fine citizens of Senoia to continue our momentum and continue our growth," he said.

"I just felt that now was the right time to do this," he said. "Robert has done one heck of a job and I hope to continue the momentum that he has established and keep the ball rolling."

Because Owens' council seat and the mayor's seat run on the same term, Owens can continue to serve on the council while running as mayor.
