Groundbreaking for the University of West Georgia hospital redevelopment project for the new Newnan Center campus will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 9 at the former hospital property on Jackson Street.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the University of West Georgia hospital redevelopment project for the new Newnan Center campus will be held on Sept. 9. The announcement came at the Newnan Downtown Development Authority meeting Wednesday.

The ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the former hospital property on Jackson Street north of downtown Newnan.

Newnan Business Development Director Hasco W. Craver IV told members of the Downtown Development Authority at their Wednesday meeting that the project is moving along.

The DDA will be bringing the proposals they have received for financing the $15 million renovation before Newnan City Council shortly. The asbestos abatement and demolition on the old hospital property will begin at the end of August, with some of the buildings coming down in the middle of September.

“The process will start in August, but you won’t ‘see’ anything until mid-September,” said Craver.

The project is still on track to have classes begin at the new UWG Newnan campus in January 2015.

Also Wednesday, the DDA authorized staff to purchase seasonal banners for downtown.

“I looked at the opportunity to put more color downtown,” said Craver. “We don’t have anything for spring or fall. They will bring a little bit of seasonal life to downtown.”

“It will be good,” said Casey Smith, chair of the DDA.

Other DDA business at August’s meeting included:

• A growler establishment is going in downtown on West Court Square, the authority learned. It will be located in the former location of Sugar Magnolia and will be for retail sales only. Customers can receive three samples of craft beer of up to 1 oz.

• Harvest Christian Bookstore will open on Sept. 7 downtown at the former location of Scott’s Bookstore on South Court Square. A ribbon- cutting ceremony will be held on Sept. 6 at noon.

• A restaurant owner is utilizing state funds and applying for a low interest loan to put in a new restaurant at 11 and 13 Jefferson Street near Madison, the former site of the Saza Italian restaurant and including a portion of the former law offices of Wood, Odom, and Edge. The new occupant will renovate the space for the restaurant and expand the dining room into a portion of the former law office.

• The Sunrise on the Square 5K race will be held on Aug. 31 during Labor Day weekend. It starts at 7:45 a.m.

• A meet-and-greet for Courtney Collins, the new Main Street manager, will be held on Thursday, Aug. 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Newnan Carnegie Library. It is a drop-in event, and complimentary refreshments will be provided. It will also serve as the next Main Street meeting.

• The DDA is moving forward with a Liveable Centers Initiative for some transportation-oriented improvements.

• The DDA will be able to purchase kiosks for downtown when the City Council approves the Gateway Signage designs. They are bringing it to the council in September for approval. The kiosks will have maps and business listings.
