Industry picks up during summer

by Clay Neely

Following a lull in project activity during late spring this year, the summer has proven to be a very active time for business activity in Coweta.

At Thursday's meeting of the Coweta County Development Authority, authority President Greg Wright was quick to highlight some of the recent project activity happenings in Coweta.

Wright said some of the new projects and leads include hosting an international automotive supplier who is considering a new manufacturing location and an international location for its projects. The Department of Economic Development and Georgia EMC are currently working on the project.

Several local industries have also contacted the Authority in regards to expanding their businesses into larger spaces.

Wright addressed one of the existing industry's plans to move into a new space in the county with the authority assisting the construction company by pulling together a plan review meeting with the county departments involved in permitting.

The aforementioned company is on a very tight time schedule and aims to be settled into their new space by Sept. 1.

A special mention of Yamaha was made in regards to their recent shipping of the new Viking Side-by-Side Vehicles from the Newnan plant last month.

Thanks to Yamaha's decision to move ATV production from Japan to Newnan several years ago, the growth in business has allowed the company to restart production in Plant #2. The company estimates that it will be able to add up to 130 new employees.

Closing the meeting was a presentation from Sandra Parker, Comprehensive Planner of the Coweta Planning and Zoning Department, who updated the authority on the activities of Brown's Mill Battlefield, which will celebrate its sesquicentennial next year.

Parker said the grand opening of Brown's Mill this year was a huge success, with about 600 people attending, and praised the rejuvenation of the Friends of Brown's Mill Battle Association, which now consist of around 75 members and helped co-sponsor the grand opening.
