Massive search continues for missing elderly woman

alt

A massive search involving tracking dogs, horses and helicopters continued Sunday for an elderly woman last seen Friday night.

But with the search approaching 48 hours, Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager said the search for Eleanor T. Alexander, 78, would be scaled back.

“We’ve done everything we can,” the sheriff said. “We will continue to canvas the area, but we are going to scale it down.”

As the official search was ratcheting down Sunday, dozens of volunteers were taking over the search. Many brought four-wheelers and horses to Alexander’s residence at 526 Providence Church Road on Sunday afternoon.

Alexander is believed to be suffering from dementia. She was possibly seen walking on Providence Church Road between 1-130: a.m. Saturday by a passerby, according to authorities.

“She is scared of everything,” said her niece, Lisa Beavers. “She may be hiding and people searching for her need to look under things.”

Alexander’s daughter-in-law, Becky Alexander, said Eleanor was last seen about 9 p.m. Friday. She was wearing a pink or red striped shirt and light colored loose pants.

She is about 5’3” tall with white hair, blue eyes and a small build.

Becky said she went by the house about 9 a.m. Saturday and noticed her mother-in-law was missing.

Public safety officials used four-wheel drive vehicles, multiple canine teams and helicopters while combing the surrounding area, Yeager said. They also used thermal imaging devices during the night.

“We’re turning it over to the volunteers,” the sheriff said. “Unless something comes up, there’s not a whole lot more we can do.”

More than 50 public safety personnel participated in the search. They included the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, Coweta County Fire Department, Department of Corrections K-9 units, as well as K-9 and search units from Spaulding and Meriwether counties.

Also searching were the Alpha Team Search and Rescue, Search and Rescue Georgia, the Georgia State Patrol and the Department of Natural Resources.

Anyone with information should call the sheriff’s office at 770-253-1502.
