Car shop employee struck by potential thief

by Wes Mayer

A car shop employee was struck by a potential thief's vehicle late Tuesday.

The employee, Robert Padgett, told Officer Ed Dalton with the Newnan Police Department that around 11:15 p.m. he went outside his shop at 2-C Bullsboro Drive at the intersection with Jefferson Street to look for a vehicle part. In the parking lot he found a man looking into a customer's car.

Padgett told officers he confronted the suspect, who explained he was there looking for items for a friend who worked at the shop.

According to Padgett, he did not allow the man into the customer's car and the suspect returned to his vehicle, a purple KIA Sephia.

As the suspect was about to leave, Padgett spoke with a co-worker on the phone while standing in front of the KIA, attempting to block the man's exit. The suspect then accelerated and hit the employee, who ended up on the hood of the car.

Before driving out the parking lot, the suspect slammed on the brakes, causing Padgett to be thrown from the hood and hitting his back on the pavement. The suspect is described as a black male with his hair in long twists. Officers were unable to locate the suspect or his vehicle.

The employee sustained minor injuries to his back and refused medical attention.

No items were reported missing from the customer's vehicle.
