State Democratic Committee to hold meeting in Newnan

Georgia’s State Democratic Committee will be meeting in Newnan next month, and the party is expected to elect its new chairman at that meeting.

The meeting is scheduled for Aug. 31 at the Wadsworth Auditorium in downtown Newnan. George Johnson, a Coweta resident who practices law in Atlanta, is Democratic Party chairman for the Third Congressional District, and in that role serves on the executive committee, which serves as the board for the state party organization.

The board is expected to name a new state chairman during the meeting in Newnan. Mike Berlon resigned from the post on May 29 amid personal issues, including a reprimand from the State Bar of Georgia.

Nikema Williams has been serving as interim chairman.

"We’ll be electing our new chairman that day,” Johnson said, adding that this meeting will be the most significant one “in a couple of years” for the Georgia Democrats.

“The state party is controlled by the state committee,” said Johnson, who explained the committee meets three or four times each year. The meetings “move throughout the state — different places” during the year, he said.

Johnson invited the committee to hold the August meeting in Newnan. Between 125-175 people are expected to attend the conclave.
