Morning stroller shot at, returns gunfire

by Wes Mayer

A man was shot in the leg by two unknown suspects during his morning walk Wednesday.

Around 6 a.m., Officers Mike Condit, Kenneth Hobbs, Scott Kilgore and Lt. Roy Jordan with the Newnan Police Department responded to the call of a shooting near the intersection of Spring Street and Boone Drive. According to Hobbs, when he and Kilgore arrived, a woman on Spring Street had flagged down Condit to show him a blood trail that began on her front sidewalk.

According to Hobbs, officers followed the trail to the victim’s residence on Wheat Street and discovered the victim had already made contact with Lt. Jordan. He had a gunshot wound to his left leg above the ankle, and the Coweta Emergency Medical Service was called to assist.

The victim told officers that he had been out for his morning walk when two unknown men appeared out of the woodline and, without saying anything, charged and shot at him. One bullet hit the victim in the leg, and he returned fire with five shots from his Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver he was carrying with him, officers reported. The suspects fled, and the victim was able to return to his home where he called police.

The victim was transported to Piedmont Newnan Hospital, and the crime scenes on Spring Street and Wheat Street were turned over to Sgt. Detective Denver Atwood for investigation.
