Delayed fireworks still have plenty of bang

Delayed from the Fourth of July because of heavy rains, the Newnan Rotary Club community celebration and fireworks show Saturday at Newnan High School's Drake Stadium nevertheless provided a festive salute to America.

The fireworks extravaganza was the 28th annual Independence Day celebration held at Drake Stadium.

It was sponsored by the Newnan Rotary Club, Coweta County, the City of Newnan, Coweta County Schools and Coweta businesses as a gift to the community.

Cathy Wright, director of the University of West Georgia Newnan Center, and State Representative Lynn Smith, both members of Newnan Rotary, served as emcees.

Live music was provided by the Musicology band featuring Doug Kees, Riley Hoskins, Bob Boyce, Patrick Thompson, Tony Boyd and special guests.

Wright along with her sister Carol Glover and their friend Merry Todd, who form a cappella singing group Chordially Yours, also performed selections.

An honor guard raised the American flag, and Wright led the crowd in a countdown to start the fireworks show.

'This is one of the biggest events in Coweta County and one of the best Independence Day events in the state of Georgia,' said Walt Thompson, Newnan Rotary Club president.
