Man wakes up to armed robbers in home

by Wes Mayer

A Newnan man was robbed at gunpoint in his home Saturday.

Around 2 a.m. Saturday, Coweta 911 received a call from a man who had been robbed at his apartment on Glenn Street. Officers Roxanne Benefield, Daniel Godfrey and Brandon Jones with the Newnan Police Department arrived on the scene and found the victim at his neighbor’s apartment with a 2-inch laceration on the right side of his head.

The victim told officers that he was awakened in his bedroom by three unknown and armed males demanding money. When the victim handed them his wallet, one of the robbers hit him in the head with the butt of his handgun, possibly a .38 revolver.

The victim said he was forced to the floor and then into his bathroom, where he stayed until he heard the three men leave.

The victim said that the men stole his 47-inch flat screen television, his cell phone, an Xbox game console and more than 10 video games, a video camera, a cross pendant necklace and his wallet, which contained about $150, his debit card, a driver’s license and a Social Security card. Around $1,400 to $1,500 worth of items were stolen.

The victim recalled that the men were between 5 feet, 7 inches and 5 feet, 9 inches tall, of dark complexion and, judging by their voices, were between 18 and 25 years old. He could not identify them by their clothes or any tattoos, but he did recall that one of the men was videotaping the robbery on his cell phone. Officers noted by the damage that the three had entered his home forcibly through the front door and left through the back.

The victim refused transport to the hospital for his injury, and the scene was turned over to Det. Sgt. Vansant with the NPD.
