Where The Action Is

Newnan marking Georgia Cities Week with movie screening

by Staff Reports

Newnan will celebrate Georgia Cities Week coming up in April on the theme “Where the Action is,” including a special movie screening and the spring edition of the “Taste of Newnan” food festival.

Georgia Cities Week, officially designated April 21-27, is sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association and is designed to showcase and celebrate cities and the many services they provide.

City officials have planned a variety of events leading up to and throughout the week. The statewide theme of this year’s Georgia Cities Week is “Georgia’s Cities: Where the Action Is,” highlighting cities’ contributions in economic development, historic preservation and in providing quality of life for residents and businesses.

Program “Extra! Extra! Where the Action is” will kick off the week at the Newnan Carnegie Library with Newnan’s very own movie extra Mayor Pro Tem Cynthia Jenkins.

She will share with attendees how to become a movie extra and tips on what to do and how to dress. The program is April 23 at 1 p.m. at the Carnegie. Call 770-683-1347 to reserve your spot.

Another special event, a screening of Newnan-filmed movie “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” will be held at the Carnegie on April 25 during the lunch hours of 12:15 to 2:30 p.m. This movie starring Jennifer Gardner was filmed here in Newnan in 2011. Movie location manager Mike Riley will be on hand to speak about his experience in the movie industry.

Riley was part of the production team on the movie set of “The Odd Life of Timothy Green.” Riley has brought a variety of Hollywood productions to Newnan and the surrounding area, said city Public Information Officer Gina Snider.

Riley has been location manager on some Hollywood’s most notable movies such as: 2007 - “Stomp the Yard,” 2003 - “Dumb and Dumber,” 2002 - “Sweet Home Alabama,” 2000 - “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”

Attendees are invited to the program where Riley will talk of his expertise and experience in the movie industry. The Carnegie is at 1 LaGrange St at the Court Square in downtown Newnan. Call the Carnegie staff at 770-683-1347 to reserve your spot.

Leading up to the celebration of Georgia Cities Week, the city with its Main Street Newnan department will have the Taste of Newnan food festival April 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. around the Court Square. The Taste of Newnan has become a local tradition for good food, fun and entertainment, said Snider.

Also for the celebration, a city inspired art contest will be held in the local high schools.

Art students have been encouraged to participate in submitting their best entries of art in depicting this year’s theme, “Where the Action is,” in celebration for ‘Georgia Cities’ week. The top five art pieces will be displayed at City Hall for the month of April. Winners will be announced soon.

The 13th annual Spring Picnic for city employees will be held Friday of the week, April 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Newnan Utilities Cabin. This year’s fish fry will show appreciation to city employees for all the hard work they do every day to make the city a great place to live, Snider said.

“We are very proud of our city and the services we provide that make it attractive to residents and visitors,” said Snider. “Too often, people are unaware of how cities enhance their quality of life, and we like them to participate in these events and learn more about local government.”
