Ad Valorem Tax: New tag law creates confusion, waits

Alexrandra Stricklin, Brandie Bing, and Angie Hall arrived at the Coweta County Tag Office around 4:25 Friday afternoon. After waiting in line for 20 minutes, they were told they couldn’t be seen that day because the line was too long and county workers are not paid overtime for working past 5 p.m.

Long lines and confusion and frustration for some are accompanying the implementation of the new Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) law in Coweta.
As of March 1, all vehicles purchased or brought into the state are charged a 6.5 percent title tax instead of sales tax and yearly taxes on the vehicle. Processing that paperwork takes more time than a simple tag renewal, and that’s why wait times are longer — even with a new part-time employee in the tag office and several workers from the property tax division pitching in to help.
