Hollis lecture series ends Thursday at Carnegie with Civil War 'discovery'

During the third and final part in the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation’s Edgar B. Hollis Distinguished Lecturer Series for 2012-2013, the University of Georgia’s Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library will showcase rare original letters, maps, documents and more next week for a Civil War “discovery.”
Attendees at the program on Feb. 28 are invited to bring their own family Civil War artifacts to the Carnegie for a show and tell starting at 4:30 p.m.
The distinguished historian and director emeritus of the Hargrett, Mary Ellen Brooks, will once again lead the discussion aided by Chantel Dunham, director of development, UGA Libraries, UGA Press and The Georgia Review.
Brooks plans to give a brief, poignant presentation and comparison from the diaries of two soldiers, one Union, one Confederate. She will also map Sherman’s march through Georgia pulling relevant materials from the discovery tables to corroborate different events.
Among the many treasures to review, special highlights of the discovery will be maps, printed on muslin for washability, of General Sherman’s invasion of Georgia; two letters and one Special Order signed by Robert E. Lee; and an 1864-65 diary detailing Sherman’s March through Georgia from the Union perspective.
The program will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the attendee show and tell, followed by orientation at 5:15 p.m., and guests will be seated at discovery tables at 5:30 p.m.
