A couple managed to escape an early Wednesday fire that destroyed their single-family residence northeast of Thomas Crossroads.
The home was in a neighborhood off Vaughn Road, in the area between Highway 154 and Highway 34 East.
By the time firefighters with the Coweta County Fire Department arrived, the house was already about 50 percent engulfed, said Assistant Fire Chief Alan Smith.
The retired couple was at the residence at 211 Hayden Lane, located off Vaughn Road north of the Andrew Bailey Road ball fields, at the time of the fire, but escaped without injury.
The husband apparently went back inside the structure and had to get out through a bathroom window as the fire raged, the assistant chief said.
More than a dozen firefighters, including three recruits, were involved in fighting the fire, which started around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Fire department crews were still out an hour after arriving to put out hot spots. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

It was the second incident within 24 hours where a house was destroyed by a fire in Coweta County. On Tuesday, a house south of Moreland was destroyed. The residents of that home were out of town at the time.
