Mattie Carmichael Hill of the Black Jack community in Senoia turns 103 years old today, and her family is hoping to learn if she is the oldest person in Coweta County.
Hill, mother of seven girls and four boys, was a homemaker and was married to the late Willie Pope Hill. They wed in 1927. She has lost one son and one daughter, her oldest two children.
“She was the caretaker for all the children and grandchildren,” said her daughter Juanita Redmon.
Son-in-law Alvin Dollar said Hill for him is “peaceful” and always has been one to “tend to her own business.”
Born in Turin, Mrs. Hill has been a lifelong member of China Grove Baptist Church but sometimes attends Mt. Calvary with her family.
“She was just a person who said what she meant and meant what she said,” noted Redmon.
For her 100th birthday, she was honored with a party and a proclamation from the Atlanta City Council. The proclamation stated that Hill’s “life’s joy” has been raising her children. This year’s celebration will be low-key, with her children and grandchildren coming to enjoy cake and a visit.

Mrs. Hill’s brother, Hubert Carmichael, also enjoyed a long, healthy life.

He was 106 when he died.

Carmichael walked everywhere, and like his sister never drove a car.

Mrs. Hill still enjoys most foods, and spending time with her young great-grandchildren.

All of her relatives describe her as “humble.”
