Coweta County’s unemployment rate was up slightly to 7.8 percent for December, compared to 7.2 percent for November and 7.5 percent for October.
The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the preliminary unemployment rate in the 10-county Three Rivers region rose to 9.3 percent in December, up four-tenths of a percentage point from 8.9 percent in November.
The Three Rivers regional jobless rate was 9.9 percent in December 2011.
December jobless rates for counties in the Three Rivers region were: Coweta, 7.8 percent; Carroll, 8.9; Heard, 9.2; Troup, 9.6; Meriwether, 10.2; Spalding, 10.9; Pike, 9.4; Upson, 11.2; Lamar, 10.6; Butts, 10.1.
November jobless rates for the Three Rivers planning region counties were: Coweta, 7.2 percent; Carroll, 8.4; Heard, 8.7; Troup, 9.2; Meriwether, 9.8; Spalding, 11; Pike, 9.1; Upson, 10.7; Lamar, 10.4; Butts, 10.9.
The regional rate rose because of a combination of factors – a slight increase in initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits and an increase in the labor force, as more people began searching for work.

There were 1,106 more new claims for unemployment benefits in construction, manufacturing, trade, transportation and warehousing, administrative and support services, and accommodations and food services. While the initial claims were up from November to December, they were down by 484, or 11 percent, from 4,401 in December 2011. The decline in claims led to an over-the-year drop in the area’s jobless rate.

The labor force, those employed or actively searching for a job, increased by 401, rising from 235,154 to 235,555 in December. The new jobseekers are counted as unemployed until they get work.

Metro Athens had the lowest area jobless rate at 6.6 percent, while the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest at 11.4 percent.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 8.6 percent in December, up one-tenth of a percentage point from 8.5 percent in November. The rate was 9.4 percent in December a year ago.
