Local Georgia Power employees will be participating in outreach projects Monday at Coweta Samaritan Clinic and One Roof Ecumenical Outreach in a day of service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
They also will be helping with a Habitat for Humanity project near Moreland.
“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to the service of others,” said Carol A. Boatright, spokewoman for the utility company. “In honor of his legacy, Georgia Power employees will use Monday, Jan. 21, a company holiday, for volunteer service and community enhancement.”
Boatright said more than 200 employees in the south metro Atlanta Region “will commemorate the day by volunteering with local community organizations.”
Volunteers will be working on a Habitat for Humanity home at 902 Polk Road near Moreland. Boatright said they “will do general cleaning, painting and home repair – as well as minor landscaping.”
Cleaning and landscaping are also on the list for those who volunteer at Coweta Samaritan Clinic.
One Roof, an alliance of churches, community organizations and businesses that offers help for individuals facing emergency situations, is located on Temple Avenue. The building also houses the Coweta Community Food Pantry.

In addition to general cleaning at the building, “volunteers from Plant Yates will sort food items,” Boatright said.

Other project locations in the general area include: Clayton County – Rainbow House children’s shelter, Habitat for Humanity, House of Dawn shelter for teen mothers and children; Henry County – Haven House facility for victims of domestic abuse, Helping in His Name Food Pantry, Feed My People; Fayette County – Fayette Care Clinic; south Fulton County – Christian City.

Georgia Power has encouraged its employees to help in their communities on the King holiday for several years. Last year, employees painted a Habitat home and sorted cans at the food pantry.

“For the sixth year in a row Chick-fil-A will provide breakfast and lunch for all Georgia Power volunteers participating in Martin Luther King Jr. service projects in the metro-Atlanta area,” Boatright said. “Fourteen Chick-fil-A locations will serve about 500 volunteers at each meal.”

The King volunteerism project “is a statewide effort,” according to Boatright. “In addition to volunteers in the south metro Atlanta Region, employees are working with civic groups to help beautify neighborhoods and support community programs around the state.”

Several projects were also done in the counties adjoining Coweta on Saturday as part of the National Day of Service in conjunction with the Obama-Biden inaugural weekend and as a tribute to King.

King, who lived most of his life in Atlanta, was a minister and Civil Rights leader who was assassinated in 1968. His brother, Alfred Daniel King, was at one time pastor of Mt. Vernon First Baptist Church in Newnan.
