Electronics recycling, documents shredding Saturday

It is estimated that there are at least 4.4 million PCs and 8 million televisions in 3 million households in Georgia. This e-waste will eventually become 334,800 tons of e-waste that will end up in our landfills.
Keep Newnan Beautiful's goal is to promote the recovery, reuse and recycling of obsolete electronic equipment and to encourage the design, manufacture and purchase of environmentally responsible electronic equipment, said Director Carol Duffey.
The following is a list of accepted items: personal computers (PCs), monitors, LCD screen / flat screen monitors, VCRs, radios, stereos, DVD players, microwaves, power supplies, rechargeable batteries, vacuums, banking equipment, telephones, pagers, networking equipment, laptops, keyboards, mice, power cables, medical equipment (non-hazardous), printers, copy machines, fax machines, cell phones, transformers, scanners, portable electronic devices, servers, HUBS, ink cartridges, toner cartridges, remotes, modems, projectors and cameras.
She notes that there is a $10 cash processing charge for each television and a $5 cash processing charge for each CRT.
Not accepted are refrigerators, washing machines, clothes dryers, dishwashers, mercury containing devices (thermometers, fire alarms), hazardous chemicals/materials, light bulbs, fluorescent tubes and bio-waste.
In addition to electronics recycling Keep Newnan Beautiful will offer city residents the opportunity to safely discard bank statements, medical history papers, and other documents containing confidential information.
"Plan to take advantage of this free document shredding event," said Duffey.
The Shred Doctor, the city’s partner on this event, will offer residents the opportunity to safely discard confidential documents using a mobile, on-site shredding truck. Residents can watch their documents being shredded and have comfort knowing that the shredded materials will be recycled without risk of their confidential information falling into the wrong hands.
