Juneteenth celebration is June 15

“Juneteenth,” a celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation, will be held again for 2013 at Willie Lynch Park in Newnan on June 15.
The Emancipation Proclamation was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln 100 years ago on Jan. 1. Because of communication difficulties at the time, it was as long as six months before the word reached American slaves.
Preparations for the fourth annual observation of Juneteenth in Newnan are already being made, according to Brittany Harrison of No Longer Tied Outreach. The festival features music, dancing, speeches, singing, food and crafts. Participants are being sought for the event and are invited to contact Harrison at 404-536-0006 or JuneteenthNewnan@gmail.com .
“We want to get the word out about this powerful experience,” she said.
