Cold weekend and soggy New Year's in forecast

A cold weekend and a soggy new year are in the forecast.
The coldest temperatures of the season so far are expected to roll in tonight, with a low of 24 forecast for Coweta by the National Weather Service. There will be sustained winds of 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Sunday night will be nearly as cold, with a low of 25.
Today’s forecast is for a 40 percent chance of rain in the morning, following the 100 percent chance of rain Friday night.
The forecast is for partly-sunny skies with a high near 48, and strong winds of 10 to 15 mph, with 20 mph gusts.
Sunday will be a little cooler, with a high of 47, but with sunny skies and slightly less robust winds.
Monday is forecast to be party sunny with a high near 55.
There’s a 50 percent chance of rain on New Year’s Eve night. Skies will be cloudy, with a low around 40.
The New Year is expected to be rainy and cloudy, but relatively warm, with a high of 58. There’s a 60 percent chance of rain New Year’s Day, and a 20 percent chance of rain that night. There’s a 30 percent chance of rain on Wednesday.

The rain from Friday night and today is only expected to total between a quarter-inch to half-inch, which could bring Coweta’s rainfall total to almost 6 inches for the month of December. Average rainfall for December is 3.9 inches for the Atlanta area.

As of Wednesday, the last day we had measurable rain, the December total was 5.47 inches, as measured by The Newnan Times-Herald weather station in downtown Newnan. Other parts of the county received heavier rains on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Dec. 26. The total measured in downtown Newnan was 2.82, but some areas of Coweta received between 3.5 and 4 inches, according to the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City.

Dec. 26 was the ninth day of rain this month. Light rains of 0.06 inch and 0.02 inch fell on Dec. 8 and 9.

On Dec. 10, 0.7 inch was recorded, and on Dec. 16, it was 1.2 inches.

Other rainfall totals were: Dec. 17, 0.19 inch; Dec. 20, 0.48 inch; Dec. 24, 0.82 inch; Dec. 25, 1.25 inches; and Dec. 26, 0.75 inch.

The low for the month is 29 degrees on Saturday, Dec. 22.
