Workers with Valley Crest Tree Care Services were back in downtown Newnan this week, removing overgrown trees.
City officials arranged for removal of the trees, which some downtown business owners complained are interfering with utilities and blocking signs.
In late November, workers began pruning trees not designated for removal from Newnan’s Court Square, as part of a plan to manage tree growth.
The city’s Tree Commission report, approved by Newnan City Council earlier in November, included professionally addressing problems with 69 trees in the downtown area, by pruning most, removing some and replanting.
“The subcontracted crews are scheduled to trim 41 downtown trees,” Mike Furbush, city landscape architect, said of the November project.
Pruning will help alleviate problems with building clearance and canopy elevation, city officials say.
Trees being removed Thursday were among those on the outer perimeter of the downtown business district, along Madison Street on either side of Jefferson Street and on Jackson Street.

At the Dec. 11 Newnan City Council meeting, council members had voted to ask the Tree Commission to reconsider its decision to remove eight trees on the outer perimeter.

Some of the affected business owners wanted the trees removed, while others wanted to keep them.
