Moreland council to look at auto auction proposal

The Moreland Planning Commission may be looking at whether the town should have a Quality Development Corridor overlay district and will study whether automobile and equipment auctions should be allowed in town.
Mayor Josh Evans met with Robert Tolleson and Sandra Parker from the Coweta County Planning Department “a few months ago,” he said. Tolleson and Parker told Evans about the county’s plans for Quality Development Corridor along major arteries in the county.
“If you develop land in those corridors, they have certain standards” which are designed to “enhance the corridor,” Evans said. Evans said he likes the idea of adopting the same restrictions.
For the town to implement those rules, “that would be included as an amendment to your zoning ordinance,” Town Attorney Mark Mitchell said. He said the proposal would have to be vetted by the planning commission before the council could vote on it.
“That’s how it would be accomplished,” Mitchell said.
“It wouldn’t affect current buildings. It would affect anything built in the future,” Evans said.
Evans brought up the overlay district at the council’s December meeting. Councilman Allyn Bell said he would like more information before forwarding the concept to the planning board, and Evans is planning to revisit the idea in January.
Also, at the December meeting, Moreland businessman Jerry Paulk told the council he would like to hold auctions for automobiles – and possibly farm equipment – about once a month.
“The current ordinance doesn’t allow any kind of car sales in the city, including a car auction,” Mitchell said.
For Paulk to hold an auto auction would require action by the council – but only after the planning commission decided to “allow that as a permitted use in certain zoning districts.”
“I think we ought to send it to the planning commission and let them look at it and bring it back a recommendation,” Councilman Jeff Burgess said.
The council agreed to send the auction suggestion to the planning commission for review.
