Thanksgiving meals offered today, Thursday
By W. WINSTON SKINNER
People who are facing a Thanksgiving alone have several options for a holiday meal today and tomorrow.
Volunteers at Powell Chapel United Methodist Church will be serving a festive dinner today. The Wednesday meal at the Old Atlanta Highway church will start at 3 p.m.
The largest Thanksgiving outreach is offered by Community Christian Church – with serving locations at Arnco-Sargent Elementary School and Newnan High School. The church will be marking its 10th year of providing the meal.
Last year more than 400 Community Christian volunteers started preparing the Thanksgiving feast on the Monday before Thanksgiving, and this year demand for meals is expected to keep volunteers busier than ever. Volunteers will cook and serve the dinner and clean up afterward.
Serving hours will be from 11:30-1:30 p.m. at both schools. People who cannot make it to Newnan High or Arnco-Sargent can get a meal delivered. To ask for delivery, call 678-740-3995 by 10 a.m. Thursday.
"We try to wait until the last minute to cut it off," said John Martin, director of outreach for Community Christian Church.
Free clothing will be available at both schools. Delivery is not available for clothing.
Greater Mt. Zion AME Church on Richard Allen Drive will also offer a Thanksgiving meal on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
First Baptist Church of Moreland held its Thanksgiving Outreach on Saturday. The Moreland church offered free food and clothes. Financial counseling was also offered.
Efforts to reach out in the community continue as Thanksgiving gives way to the Christmas season. Perpetual Community Resource Centre on Salbide Avenue is coordinating a coat and blanket drive through Dec. 3. For information, call 678-634-6232 or email email@example.com .
