Coweta County Sheriff's Office personnel were out delivering more than 200 turkeys Tuesday for the needy throughout the county.
It's become an annual tradition for the last seven or eight years, thanks to an anonymous benefactor dubbed "King Turkey," who provides funding for the dinners.
"It's a full Thanksgiving Day meal with all the trimmings," said Sheriff Mike Yeager. "It's a great program and we just appreciate the contributor who wishes to remain anonymous."
Deputies, Coweta County Jail personnel and trustees collected and sorted the food for the last few days, and were busy loading it all up on Tuesday outside the jail. Deputies and volunteers then were off distributing the food.
The annual event is headed up by Corporal Michelle Murray and other School Resource Officers and deputies with the court services division.
"They really push this thing," Yeager said. "Too often people see us as the bad guys, but this is the part of the job we really enjoy. It's just a great way for us to give back."
Each of the meals was individually boxed and included turkey, cranberry sauce, dressing, rolls, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, green beans and fruit cocktail.
The sheriff's office works with local school counselors, churches and other social service agencies to identify needy families.
