Lamar Wright, longtime Newnan resident, has been named grand marshal for Newnan’s annual Christmas parade on Dec. 2.
The parade will be held at 3 p.m. on Dec. 2, stepping off from the city park at Temple Avenue and Jackson Street. The route will go through the Court Square and out LaGrange Street to Newnan High School.
It’s a “Merry Musical Christmas” so bring your holiday songs, says Newnan information officer Gina Snider. The parade will include floats, walking groups, decorated cars and trucks and marching bands.
Wright has been involved with the local Rutledge Center for many years, working with the community’s mentally-challenged citizens. Wright developed the Rutledge Chorus and mentored Rutledge clients during his time there. At the time of his retirement he was serving as board chair for the organization.
Since 1988, Wright has worked at McKoon Funeral Home and retired in 2008. He served as general manager at the time of his retirement.
Wright is active at Central Baptist Church, where he serves as a deacon, serves on the altar guild and sings in the choir. He is organizing a family care ministry. With other participants, the church has recently organized The Central String Ensemble.

He is married to Cathy Wright, the Newnan campus director for the University of West Georgia. They have two sons, Brian and Adam.

They have three grandchildren, Carlisle, Cole and Adrian, all of whom live in Nashville.

If you are interested in being in the parade, contact Snider or Wendy LaRotonda at 770-253-2682 -- extension 203 or 228, or go to www.ci.newnan.us.ga and download an application. The completed application may be faxed to 770-254-2353 or mailed to 25 LaGrange St., Newnan, Ga., 30263, along with the $35 entry fee.

Applications must be received by Nov. 26. A portion of the proceeds will support the Georgia Municipal Association’s Mayor’s Motorcade event to provide holiday gifts to those in the state’s mental hospitals.
