Family, friends and even some who never met the late Nicholas Whitlock will be holding a tailgate party and benefit Nov. 10 to raise funds for the newly established Capt. Nicholas Schade Whitlock Foundation.
Captain Whitlock was killed on active duty in February 2012, when the plane he was piloting crashed in Djibouti, Africa, while returning from a special operations mission in Afghanistan. The Newnan-Coweta County Airport was recently renamed in his honor and is now called Newnan-Coweta County Airport Whitlock Field.
The proceeds will help fund the Nicholas Whitlock Leadership Scholarship, which will be awarded to a Newnan High School senior planning to attend Mercer University. Funds will also go to sponsor hunting trips for disabled veterans.
The Hunter 87 Bluegrass Bash will be held at the Newnan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post on U.S. 29 north of Newnan. The family-friendly event will include a barbecue, drinks, football, activities for the children, a silent auction and live bluegrass music performed by the Packway Handle Band.
All football games will be broadcast at the event, so guests are invited to bring a picnic lunch or snack and enjoying tailgating with friends. There will be activities for the children to enjoy, so fans of all ages are encouraged to attend.
The event begins at 1 p.m and will continue to about 11 p.m. The Packway Handle Band will begin performing at 6 p.m., and there will be a silent auction beginning at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $25 and include dinner, two drink tickets and live music.
