A Coweta County School System bus, empty except for the driver, was broadsided Friday afternoon by another vehicle.
The driver of the second vehicle was taken to Piedmont Newnan Hospital for observation, and the bus driver was expected to be checked out by the driver's personal physician, according to authorities at the scene.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Temple Avenue and Hospital Road a little before 2 p.m., said Sergeant Lane Yearta with the Newnan Police Department. Witnesses said a red Nissan Pathfinder was westbound on Temple and failed to stop at the red light.
At the same time, Bus 142-9 was on Hospital Road and turning left onto Temple when it was hit, Yearta said. The impact smashed in the left side of the bus and broke its axle as well.
On Monday, two school buses were involved in an accident when one rear-ended the other in the parking lot of Brooks Elementary. There were 64 students on the two buses. Fifteen students were checked out by emergency personnel at the scene and one of those was taken to Piedmont Newnan at the request of the parent.
