Grantville Council urged to revisit recreation department decision

Supporters of the Grantville Recreation Department spoke out Monday, urging Grantville City Council members to reconsider their decision to eliminate a position and close the year-round program to help balance the cash-strapped city’s budget.
“We are reaching some children and youth, keeping them off the streets for at least a little while,” said Trellis Zackery, who was joined by former recreation department employee Kelly Iverson as she spoke before the council.
Zackery said approximately 120 people have utilized the recreation department programs – which included basketball, baton, crafts, karate, aerobics, volleyball and game nights – since the summer program ended.
“This is an unselfish request,” said Zackery, who kept her part-time position with the department. “It isn’t about the money, it’s about helping the kids and community.”
Zackery proposed only opening on certain days or hours as an option for retaining the year-round program.
Recreation board member Ruby Hines echoed Zackery’s pleas, requesting that the council vote immediately to reinstate the program.
Mayor Jim Sells told Hines the matter would have to be brought before the council as an agenda request and that sunshine laws prevented him from granting her request.
