The Nov. 6 general election is just five weeks away, and the voter registration deadline is rapidly approaching.
If you aren’t registered to vote, Oct. 9 is the deadline if you want to be eligible to vote in the general election.
Paper absentee ballots are already available for the race.
Early in-person voting will begin Oct. 15. In Coweta, early voting is done in the Coweta Voter Registration Office.
For the majority of Cowetans, the only contested races on the ballot will be the president of the United States and two seats on the Georgia Public Service Commission.
There are also two constitutional amendments — one dealing with state authority to create and fund charter schools, and the other allowing the state to enter into multi-year real estate rental agreements.
But those who live in the Coweta County Commission’s Fifth District will vote on their county commissioner, and those who live in Georgia House District 132 will vote on their state representative.
Incumbent County Commissioner Al Smith, a Democrat, is being challenged by Republican Hayden Marlowe.

And State Rep. Carl Von Epps of LaGrange, a Democrat, is being challenged by Republican Gene King of Meriwether County for the State House District 132 seat.

Portions of Coweta became part of District 132 following redistricting. The district includes the Grantville, Smokey Road, Pine Road, and Central precincts.

The Coweta Chapter of the NAACP will be hosting a candidate forum for the State House race. The forum will be Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Grantville City Council chambers in the Glanton Municipal Complex.

The Fifth Commission District also changed because of redistricting. It covers the central part of the county, including much of Newnan.

If you are unsure of which district you live in, you can visit the Georgia Secretary of State’s My Voter Page at www.sos.georgia.gov/mvp . On the My Voter Page you can view all your districts, your polling place, your status and even your custom sample ballot. Or call the Coweta Voter Registration Office at 770-254-2615.
