Coweta County Fair: It's 'absolutely wonderful'; only 2 days left

Smiles of delight show on the faces of Susan and little Ashlyn Mitchell as they ride down the big slide on a burlap sack on the midway at the Coweta County Fair.

There are only two days left to get your fair fix.
The 2012 Coweta County Fair wraps up Saturday.
The fair is open from 5 p.m. to midnight today and noon to midnight on Saturday at the fairgrounds on Pine Road south of Newnan. Saturday is Military Appreciation Day, with free admission for those showing military ID.
This year’s fair has been “absolutely wonderful,” said Scott Cortner, fair committee chairman for the Newnan Kiwanis Club, which hosts the annual event.
“We set attendance records for Saturday and Sunday,” Cortner said. “And we have exceeded attendance compared to last year, every day,” he said.
One reason has been the perfect fall weather.
“The weather is just absolutely fabulous. We couldn’t ask for better,” Cortner said.
He thinks another reason for the improved turnout is that they have really gotten the word out. Signs advertising the fair are everywhere, including outside Coweta. “I think we’ve been a little more visible in our advertising,” Cortner said.

The new entertainment, the Great American Frontier Show, which includes a trick riding and horse show and a trained wolf show and the Puppetone Rockers, have been very well received, Cortner said. “People are really enjoying the horse show, and the Puppetone Rockers went really well,” Cortner said. The Puppetone Rockers, a mobile puppet and music outfit, left Wednesday night for another engagement, but the Great American Frontier Show will be at the fair through the end of the week, as will the Torres Family Circus.

The live music has also been fabulous, Cortner said. “People could come out there with $5 and just listen to a band for three or four hours and get their money’s worth,” he said.

If you haven’t been to this year’s fair yet, “you don’t know what you’re missing,” Cortner said.

Tonight’s live entertainment is bluegrass band Lard Bucket, which will play from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Walker Horne stage, between the exhibit hall and ag building.

Tonight is the last night for the 4-H Petting Zoo. All the animals will have to move out of the ag building after tonight’s fair to make way for the dairy heifer show on Saturday.

The petting zoo normally closes at 9 p.m. but will be closing a little earlier tonight.

The schedule for tonight is the Earth Quest birds of prey show at 5:30 and 7:30. The wolf show will be at 6 and 8 p.m., and the horse show will be at 7:30 and 9:30. The Torres Family Circus will perform at 7 and 9 p.m.

Saturday’s special events include the dairy heifer show at noon, the 4-H Showmanship Sweepstakes at 5:30 and the Coweta Cattlemen’s Steak Cookoff at 6 p.m.

The EarthQuest show will be at 1, 3:30, and 7. The wolf show will be at 2, 5, and 8, and the horse show will be at 3:30, 6:30 and 10. The Torres Family Circus will be at 3, 6, and 9.

And rounding out the fair will be the finals of the Open Mic Atlanta “Competition Alley” singer/songwriter contest, from 7 to 10 p.m.

Performers will be: According to Jesus, Mary Kate Farmer, Aspen Countryman, Luna and Sol, d-sass, Beautiful Agony, Greg Scheuer, Kevin Whitfield, Maggie Schnieder, and Clusters of Grey.

Fair admission is $5, with children under 6 free.
