Coweta County’s unemployment rate was 8.7 percent for August, down from 9.2 percent in July, according to figures released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor.
The preliminary unemployment rate in the 10-county south metro Three Rivers Regional Commission area declined to 9.9 percent in August, down three-tenths of a percentage point from 10.2 percent in July. The rate was 10.8 percent in August 2011.
The Three Rivers rate decreased because there were 1,371 fewer layoffs in manufacturing, construction, trade, professional and technical services, administrative and support services, health care and social assistance, and accommodations and food services, according to the labor department. Also, the area’s labor force declined by 1,873, partially because some students left summer jobs to return to school.
As a whole, Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 9.2 percent in August, unchanged from July. The jobless rate was 9.9 percent in August a year ago.
August jobless rates for the Three Rivers planning district 10-county region are: Coweta, 8.7 percent; Carroll, 9.7; Heard, 10.6; Troup, 10.0; Meriwether, 11.4; Spalding, 10.9; Pike, 8.9; Upson, 11.4; Lamar, 10.9; Butts, 10.7.

Rates of other nearby counties outside Three Rivers for August included: Fayette, 7.8 percent; and Fulton, 9.9 percent. They are under the Atlanta Regional Commission.

Among other figures noted by the labor department, Metro Athens continued to have the lowest area jobless rate at 6.7 percent for August, while the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha Regional Commission had the highest at 12.2 percent.

The number of jobs in the state rose by 25,100, or six-tenths of a percentage point, from 3,914,100 in July to 3,939,200 in August. Georgia has created 49,700 jobs since August 2011 when there were 3,889,500 jobs.
