A full slate of activities celebrating Homecoming Week at both Newnan and Northgate high schools is planned this week, leading up to the Cougars’ Friday football matchup with Hardaway and the Vikings’ battle with Union Grove.
Spirit of Newnan, Spirit of America: Celebrating 125 Years of Excellence in Education is this year’s theme at Newnan High, where a first block door decorating contest and Spirit Days will mark Homecoming Week school days.
Newnan High Spirit Days are: Monday – Good Morning America (pajamas), Tuesday – Old Time America (senior citizens), Wednesday – American Icon (presidents, TV characters, athletes), Thursday – USA Spirit (red, white and blue), and Friday – Homecoming T-shirts.
The Cougars’ annual Homecoming Parade leaves Newnan High at 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening, winding through downtown Newnan and concluding at Veterans Memorial Plaza in the city park at Jackson Street and Temple Avenue. Former NHS Principal Holmes Cunningham will serve as Grand Marshal.
A pep rally – at which Newnan High’s Homecoming Court will be introduced – is set to begin at approximately 6:30 p.m. on South Court Square across from Scott’s Bookstore.
Northgate will celebrate with The Viking Games as its theme, planning Spirit Days and its annual Powderpuff Football Game mid-week.

Northgate Spirit Days include: Monday – Game Day (college, pro or Olympic sports team), Tuesday – Fire and Ice (dress opposite from a friend), Wednesday – Mocking Day (reality TV personality, movie star or character), Thursday – Capital Day (tacky attire, and Friday – Homecoming T-shirts, designed by Northgate student Tiffany Garrett.

The school’s annual Powderpuff Football Game will take place Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Henry Seldon Field. Admission is $4, and the public is invited to attend.

On Friday, Northgate’s band, AFJROTC, homecoming court and clubs will form starting about 1:30 p.m. for a “Tribute Parade” through campus starting shortly before 2 p.m. That will be followed by the student body gathering in the Johnny Brown gym for a 2:15 pep rally, at which time the homecoming king will be crowned. The pep rally will go until about 3:15 p.m. with students released for the day from the gym.

At Friday evening’s Northgate Homecoming game, the Homecoming Court will be presented with the queen crowned at halftime.
