Authorities safely detonated a grenade found off Gordon Road in south Coweta County Sunday.
The grenade was discovered by a young girl.
The device, commonly known as a "pineapple grenade," was live and was blown up by explosive experts with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, according to Major Jimmy Yarbrough with the Coweta County Sheriff's Office.
David Hester and Charles Adcock were clearing property in a wooded area near Gordon Road and Eastside School Road when one of their daughters saw the grenade, the major said.
"One of the girls went up and said, 'daddy, what's this' and pointed to the device," Yarbrough said. "Hester was a former Marine and knew what it was, but because it was so rusted, he didn't know if it was live."
The grenade was found in a slight depression next to a tree stump, the major said. "It looked like it had been there a long time. The GBI placed charges around it and blew a crater around it."
No one was injured.
