Newnan Notes: Keep Newnan Beautiful campaign continues

Keep Newnan Beautiful asks, “Do you know you can purchase recycled napkins, paper towels, office paper and other products?”
It has been calculated that Americans throw away so much office paper that a year’s worth would stretch from Los Angeles to New York and stand 12 feet tall. Also, consider that logging of the boreal forest in Canada and Siberia is happening at such a rapid pace it has affected the many songbirds that live there.

The Carnegie schedule of events is:
• Monday, July 23 10:30 a.m Carnegie Literary Circle – this month’s selection is “The Death of Ivan Ilych” by Leo Tolstoy. New members welcome.
• Monday, July 23 2:30 p.m. “The Melon Boys, Young Adult Edition.” Join author Michael Ottensmeyer as he discusses his book about the struggles of migrant workers in the Deep South & his writing/ publishing story.
• Tuesday, July 24 10 a.m. Art of Reading – children listen to a story and then create an art project associated with the story. This week is for ages 3-5. Registration required, limited to first 20 sign-ups.
• Tuesday, July 24 2:30 p.m. A Writers’ Exchange – Writers gather to exchange ideas and work on their skills. Writer, E. Cromwell, shares how to conduct interviews for research. Swanee Ballman facilitates.
• Wednesday, July 25 10 a.m. Family Movie Time – “The Muppets”, rated PG. Come enjoy the comic adventure, popcorn provided. Free.
• Wednesday, July 25 7-9 p.m. “The Carnegie – After Hours.” The Carnegie is open special hours and will feature a live radio broadcast starting at 8 p.m. All first floor services including computers and honor book system will be available.
• Thursday, July 26 10:00 a.m. State Representative Lynne Smith will read “Who Pooped in the Park” and talk about state parks including Chattahoochee Bend in Coweta.
• Friday, July 27 10 a.m. Family Craft Day – Miss Dianne will have a free craft project for the whole family to enjoy.
• Friday, July 27 2 p.m. Armchair Travelers – “Globe Trotting” - World traveler and accomplished photographer, Gordon Kilgore, provides a slide show presentation of various travel destinations around the world.

The city of Newnan Animal Warden, Cyndi Hoffman, reminds summer heat can be dangerous for pets. We all know dogs feel the heat—just take one look at your pooch’s tongue hanging down to the ground, and you know he needs water. But did you know that cats are prone to overheating and dehydration, too?
Those cats most at risk for dehydration are the ones who suffer from illnesses such as kidney disorders, cancer, or hyperthyroidism. Elderly and nursing cats are also prone to drops in fluid levels, as well as diabetic cats whose condition is not regularly monitored.
Many cats may not drink fluids until they’ve lost as much as 8 percent of their body’s water stores. That’s why it’s very important to give your cat access to fresh water at all times to maintain proper hydration.
Here are some additional tips to keep kitty hydrated this summer:
•Change your cat’s water bowl frequently to ensure freshness.
• Place multiple bowls of water around the house for easy access.
• Determine your cat’s preference. Does he like tap or bottled water? Some cats prefer certain bowls or water fountains.
• On the road? Your cat should still have regular access to water, especially after flying.
Monitor your cat’s water intake.
