A driver apparently lost consciousness Friday, causing her vehicle to strike two traffic signal control boxes on Jefferson Street and knocking out power to one of the city’s more congested intersections.
Newnan Police officers were out directing traffic after the accident, which occurred about 2:20 p.m., at the intersection of Jefferson and Clark streets. Officers were expected to remain on the scene for several hours while repairs were being made.
Besides the Jefferson/Clark intersection, officers also were working traffic at the nearby Clark/Jackson Street intersection and also farther east on Jefferson Street in an effort to ease the traffic flow.
Laverne Bailey, 58, of Newnan, was southbound on Jefferson Street in a 1999 Toyota Avalon when she apparently lost consciousness while rounding the curve, according to Officer Scott Milan with the Newnan Police Department.
“She said she did not remember anything,” the officer said. Bailey’s vehicle went up the right curve and hit two traffic signal boxes.
One of those ended up under her car and was pushed several feet.
A passenger in the vehicle, Elaine Saunders, was not injured, Milan said, adding Bailey was being treated at the scene by Coweta Emergency Medical Service.
No charges had been filed as of Friday afternoon pending completion of the investigation, the officer said.
