A Coweta County man was killed after his vehicle smashed into a utility pole early Monday morning.
Ronald Hawkins, 37, known to friends and family as Shay, was pronounced dead shortly after the single-vehicle accident, authorities said. The crash occurred on Macedonia Road between Witcher Road and Doc Perry Road.
Rescue units with the Coweta County Fire Department arrived at the scene at 6:27 a.m. and found the vehicle off the roadway, said Mitch Coggin, assistant fire chief.
“The vehicle had rolled over and landed back upright with its only occupant entrapped,” Coggin said. “Using the Jaws of Life, the fire department had to open one door to remove the patient.”
Coweta County Coroner Ray Yeager said Hawkins was traveling on Macedonia Road when he apparently overcorrected.
The vehicle rolled over, hit a utility pole broadside and then flipped back up on its wheels, Yeager said, adding Hawkins was on his way to work in Carrollton at Southwire.
Hawkins was transported to Piedmont Newnan Hospital where he was pronounced dead by the coroner.
“Shay was a talented engineer and a valuable part of the Southwire team,” said company spokesman Gary Leftwich. “Both he and his contributions to our company will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.”
The Georgia State Patrol trooper handling the investigation was not immediately available for comment.
