College Credit Transfer

West Georgia Tech, LaGrange College make agreement

by Staff Reports

A new statewide partnership will make it easier for West Georgia Technical College graduates to enter LaGrange College with a transfer of credit hours.

This comes as WGTC prepares to open its new Coweta County campus on Turkey Creek Road south of Newnan this fall.

The articulation agreement between the Georgia Independent College Association and the Technical College System of Georgia was signed last month in a state Capitol ceremony hosted by Gov. Nathan Deal.

Labeled an “unprecedented public-private partnership,” the agreement is believed to be one of only a few such credit transfer and admission acceptance arrangements in the nation. Planners say it aims to facilitate college completion throughout Georgia and empower the future workforce.

“At LaGrange College, we’re pleased to have an agreement that helps spell out a clear partnership between us and the technical college system,” said Provost Dr. David Garrison. “The ability to transfer select coursework will benefit both currently enrolled and prospective students.” West Georgia Technical College President Dr. Skip Sullivan agrees.

“This articulation agreement for general education courses between our institution and LaGrange College creates added pathways for our students, and will help them pursue their individual career goals. It’s another step in our state’s effort to provide a seamless educational progression for all Georgians.”

Under the agreement, a West Georgia Technical College student having a minimum 2.5 GPA for all academic work attempted and an Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Science degree will be admitted to LaGrange College.

Students can be denied admission only if coursework beyond the two-year degree falls below minimum admission standards or applicants are not in good standing.

Admission to LaGrange College does not guarantee admission to specific majors or programs. Students must meet minimum admission requirements specific to select majors or programs to be considered for admission into them. Those who have not completed prerequisites for admission to specific majors will be required to complete the prerequisites at LaGrange College.

Beyond LaGrange, the covenant applies to 18 other private colleges aligned with the Georgia Independent College Association: Andrew College, Berry College, Brenau University, Brewton-Parker College, Covenant College, Emmanuel College, Georgia Military College, Mercer University, Paine College, Piedmont College, Point University, Reinhardt University, Shorter University, Thomas University, Toccoa-Falls College, Truett McConnell College, Wesleyan College and Young Harris College.

Brenau has a campus in Fairburn, and Brewton-Parker and Mercer offer some courses at the Coweta School System’s Central Educational Center in Newnan. Point University is nearby in West Point, Ga.

The agreement includes all of the Technical College System’s 25 institutions located throughout Georgia.
