Cowetans earn recognition from Georgia Southern

Four Coweta County students were recognized for academic achievement by Georgia Southern University during the institution’s Honors Day Convocation recently.

Kayla Curtis, Christopher Kanthak and Sarah Russell, all of Newnan, received Outstanding Scholar Graduating Senior Awards. In addition, Curtis was presented with the Richard J. Waugh Justice Studies Award. Dana Sylvestre of Senoia, a sophomore at the university, received the Biology Award.

GSU’s Honors Day Convocation is held each spring to highlight distinguished students from all disciplines and areas of college life.

• Singleton earns all A’s at Moreland Elementary

Matthew Singleton, a third-grader at Moreland Elementary School, earned all A’s for the third grading period of the 2012-13 school year. His name was inadvertently omitted from the honor roll list released by the school.

• Area students honored by UWG Anthropology Department

Three area students were recognized for outstanding achievement by the University of West Georgia at its recent Anthropology Awards Dinner, an annual event which spotlights students who have excelled academically throughout the school year in the Anthropology Department at UWG. 

Juniors Matt Evans of Sharpsburg and Brittany Coomes of Newnan received the Antonio J. Waring, Jr. Endowment Scholarship. This award was designed to support original student research in anthropology, and recipients typically use the endowment funds to present their research publicly and professionally.

Both students will receive the scholarship during the Fall 2013 semester. 

Kathryn Milam of Whitesburg, a senior at UWG, was awarded the John Walton Whatley Scholarship. This award was designed to support sophomore, junior and senior undergraduate students from Polk, Carroll, Haralson or Troup counties. 

All three students are majoring in anthropology.

• Local scholars inducted into national honor society

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi recently inducted the following local scholars: Alexander Yeager of Grantville; Stephanie Tomys, Casey Hice, Byron Francis, Chelsea Riggs, Jonathan Otto, William Stearns Jr., Tina Harvey, Danielle Blount, Katherine Strickland, Cassie Copeland, Luis Player-Delgado and Courtney Cooper, all of Newnan; Christopher Ford, Nicole Spiller, Anna Killmeier, Emily Evans and Meredith Foster, all of Sharpsburg.

• Atkinson Elementary plans May 10 Spring Fling

Atkinson Elementary School will hold its Spring Fling Friday, May 10 from 5-8 p.m.

The event will feature carnival rides and games, a petting zoo, prizes, food, auction baskets and other activities. Wristbands, available for $20, allow unlimited rides and games plus food and drink. A ticket punch is available for $10 and is equal to 15 tickets, and single tickets are available for $1 each.
