Mrs. Sandra Deal with kindergarten student Marley Hughley, pre-k student Juliana Maxfield, and kindergarten student Holden Hjemvick – the students presented Deal with a bouquet of flowers and the book “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein.

Georgia first lady Sandra Deal visited Poplar Road Elementary last week as part of her “Read Across Georgia” literary campaign.

“Our kids loved meeting Mrs. Deal,” said Poplar Road Principal Leslie Goodwin in Coweta County School System press release. “She reads so engagingly and with so much energy, and they loved representing Poplar Road to a special guest.”

During her visit, Deal recited a poem written by her husband, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, called “Learning to Read,” followed by her rendition of the book, “Who I’d Like to Be,” by Elizabeth Brown.

“Who I’d Like to Be” is Brown’s first book, written when she was 90 years old. Her great-granddaughter, Alexandria Elizabeth Brown, did the illustrations. Both are from Georgia.

“My husband and I believe one of the most important things you can do is learn to read,” Deal told the kindergarten students at Poplar Road. If students can read well by grade three, Deal said, then they will be very likely to be successful in school, in high school and college, and in their careers.

Deal also visited Newnan Crossing Elementary School and read “Learning to Read” and “Who I’d Like to Be” to the kindergarten students there.

First lady Deal donated a copy of “What I’d Like to Be” to both school libraries as a part of her visit.
