Pam Barbaree

Pam Barbaree teaches fourth and fifth grade special education at Northside Elementary School. This year is her 22nd of teaching.

Why did you become a teacher?

I started my career late. A dear friend who was a teacher inspired me. She was like a mentor to me, and I was very interested in what she did, and she taught special ed.

What is your favorite part of being a teacher?

The change from day to day. Every day is different.

If you were not a teacher, what would you be doing?

I would probably be in some type of social work. Something that helps unfortunate people.

What do you do for fun?

I like to travel. I play golf, and I exercise. I’m doing Zumba right now.

What are your favorite movies?

Shawshank Redemption

Family?

I moved here from Alabama with my husband. Most of our family is there. We have a big family with kids and six grandkids.

What is the one thing you want your students to learn?

How to function in the real world, that they still can even with their disabilities. We build up self-esteem a lot; and with self-esteem, they make a lot of progress.

What are you looking forward to this year?

The changes. There are a lot at Northside this year. I’m really looking forward to it.
