Wilkes

Ashley Wilkes teaches fifth grade at Brooks Elementary School. This year is her fifth of teaching, and she has been at Brooks since it opened.

Why did you become a teacher?

I moved all over growing up, and teachers were always so nice to me and welcoming. I wanted to do that for others.

What is your favorite part of being a teacher?

Getting to be creative and talking with the kids. Learning about them and seeing their pride when they accomplish the tough goals from the beginning of the year.

If you were not a teacher, what would you be doing?

Sports journalism. I switched to teaching right before my junior year of college.

What do you do for fun?

I go to sporting events, preferably college football games.

What is your favorite movie?

'Remember the Titans'

What is your favorite book?

'Heaven is for Real'

What is the one thing you want your students to learn?

Even if it something that seems impossible, when they look back at the end of the year, they can see they accomplished their goals.

What are your summer plans?

Visiting family in Charleston and getting ready for next year.
