Some upcoming first through sixth grade Coweta students were able to learn life skills and critical thinking earlier this summer through Camp Invention at Northside Elementary School in Newnan.

Camp Invention is a unique learning experience providing, “quality programming in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.” It gives students creative, hands-on activities, incorporating essential STEM concepts.

“It’s a quality program, and they (the students) are learning a lot,” said Charlotte Leakes, director of Northside’s Camp Invention.

Leakes is also the Title 1 teacher at Northside.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math and focuses on real-world applications for science and math with more hands-on experience. Recently, schools in Coweta County have been focusing on providing more STEM opportunities for their students and teachers.

“They give you a kit, but no instructions, so the kids design it,” said Austen Martin, one of the Camp Invention instructors. Martin’s class for Camp Invention was “Super Go.” It dealt with pulley system car, ramps, and cars as simple machines.

This year’s program included activities on creating an invention after brainstorming and designing it, honing each of the five senses, creating pinball machines with leftover parts, and simple machines.
