Summer reading initiatives kick off this week at all branches of the Coweta County Library System. Blake Stewart, a member of the Newnan High School Literacy Enrichment Class, reads “Otis” by Loren Long to Kaylie Green and Ryan Hughes, first-grade students at Atkinson Elementary, during a reading initiative – Read for the Record.

With the 2013-2014 school year at a close, summer vacation has begun for parents and students, and the Coweta County Library System is providing many different activities for both.

Jimmy Bass, director of Coweta’s library system, is excited about all four branches of the library will be offering.

“The summer of 2014 figures to be an electric one for the four branches of Coweta’s Library system,” he said.

Each branch will feature various summer reading contests - “Fiz, Boom, Read!” for children, “Spark a Reaction,” for teens, and “Literary Elements” for adults. These and other reading contests will begin on Thursday, May 27.

In the summer, each branch will also feature special performers throughout June and July. These performers include: magician, Ken Scott; puppeteer Lee Bryan; and Mr. Magical Balloons Dewayne Reynolds.

Science programs will also be featured, including: the BioBus, a mad science show by Doc Atoms, and science demonstrations by Dr. Margo Wimbush.

A new event this summer will be a foam party, where participants should be prepared to get foamed and wet as they play in a mountain of foam.

Renovations to the A. Mitchell Powell Jr. library will be finished, and it will feature new bathrooms, lighting, and paint.

For a complete list of activities, visit the library system’s website at www.cowetapubliclibrary.org, or in the summer program booklets available at each library branch.
