Teacher in Focus: Joanie Weller
by Celia Shortt
Joanie Weller is a math teacher at Northgate High School. She has been teaching in Coweta County for 23 years.
Why did you become a teacher?
It was a calling. I fought it for years, trying to do other things and then accepted it was what I needed to do.
What is your favorite part?
The interaction with the students. I like to get to know them and what’s going on in their lives. The light bulb moment when they understand something difficult. Helping them with their challenges.
What do you when you’re not teaching?
I’m at the gym a lot, and I’m really involved in my kids’ lives. I have a 21 year old son and 17 year old daughter.
If you were not teaching, what would you be doing?
I would probably be an event planner. I’ve planned prom here a few times and loved it.
What is your favorite movie and play?
What is your favorite book?
I like any mystery by Iris Johansen
What is the one thing you want your students to learn?
I want them to learn they can face a challenge and overcome it. That is something they can use forever.
What is the best part of being at Northgate?
We are such a phenomenal family. I love it. It’s like a second family to me. It doesn’t matter who is running the show because we are such a tight knit family.
