Kate Davis has been teaching for 32 years, all of which have been at Western Elementary School. She teaches physical education, and this year is her last of teaching, as she plans to retire.

Why did you become a teacher?

I became a teacher because I enjoyed working with younger people. I had an excellent education and role models growing up. I went to a great mill school which was supported by parents and the community. It also had lots of extra-curricular activities. I became a PE teacher because of the physical education I received there.

What is the best part of being a teacher?

This age group. They are eager and have a lot of energy.

If you were not a teacher, what would you be doing?

I would like to have been a musician or a ballerina. I grew up taking dance lessons and playing a few instruments.

What do you do for fun?

I like to read southern fiction because we are quirky. I garden and work in the yard. I am also a sports fan, particularly Auburn.

What is your favorite book?

“The Same Sweet Girls” by Cassandra King.

What is your favorite movie?

“A League of Their Own”

Do you have a family?

I am married with one daughter who lives in McDonough.

What will you miss when you retire?

I will miss the kids’ energy, enthusiasm, hugs, and funny stories.

What is the one thing you want your students to learn?

We have three goals each day – be safe, learn something new, and do something fun. If you come to my class and haven’t laughed or smiled by the time it’s over, I haven’t done something right.
