Heritage senior rallies school to support MS

Kyle Shuman’s life changed soon after the fifth grade. Shuman, a senior at The Heritage School in Newnan, learned that his mother, Tracey, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS).
“As a 10-year-old, I had no idea what MS was,” said Shuman. “I’ve seen my mom go through a lot of ups and downs. It’s been a struggle, especially with all the different treatments.”
Growing up, Shuman was frustrated that little information about MS was available. “I feel like MS gets put behind other conditions. I want to make sure people know what it is and how they can help.”
When The Heritage School senior class was asked to generate a community service project, Kyle proposed a week-long series of events in March — March is National MS Awareness Month — culminating in a walk to raise money. The entire senior class rallied behind him in support and unanimously voted for this to be its spring service project.
With the help of his classmates, Shuman organized several small fundraisers at school this week. They included student-run bake sales during lunch and break times, and a dress down day, known at Heritage as “Tag Day.” For $5, a Middle School student is allowed to wear the Upper School dress code while an Upper School student is allowed to be out of dress code. All students are encouraged to wear green and orange — the international colors representing MS awareness.
The service project culminates today with a walk around the Heritage campus.
Shuman wanted to do something that the entire school community and larger community could easily access and participate in. “Everyone is welcome to join us for the walk on Thursday,” said Shuman. “Our student band, The Talons, will be playing music to kick things off. We are asking people to make a donation if they can, but even without a donation, we want people to come walk with us to raise awareness of MS with the hopes of one day finding a cure.”
The walk will begin at 3:30 p.m. on The Heritage School campus located at 2093 Highway 29 North, Newnan, 30265. All funds raised from the service project will be donated to the Georgia Chapter of the MS Society.
