Catherine Cathey

Catherine Cathey teaches fourth grade math at Eastside Elementary School. She has been teaching for 16 years. She taught middle school for three years in La., and the rest have been at Eastside.

Why did you become a teacher?

In college chemistry class at LSU, I had to explain what microorganisms were to children. I enjoyed it and decided to go into education.

What is the best part about being a teacher?

When the students get it and the look on their face, you can feel it - their success. Helping them succeed and having them begin to see math as not so bad.

What is the best part about being at Eastside?

We are like family out here. If something happens, you know you have people around you who will help.

Do you have a family?

I’ve been married for 13 years, and we have three kids.

What do you for fun when you’re not teaching?

Work in the yard and spend time at the soccer fields with my kids. We travel a lot and are trying to get the kids to see as many places as they can. We just started sailing, too. My husband always wanted to do it.

If you were not a teacher, what would you be doing?

Some kind of event planning. I enjoy doing it for the school and asking people to help.

What is the one thing you want your students to learn?

To build their self-confidence, so they have a foundation to feel like they can success.
