For the month of January 2014, Glanton Elementary 1st grade students have been employed for a fictitious newspaper, The “Glanton Gazette.”

Every first grader was employed as a staff writer and worked on different articles for the paper. Each day, they had to dress for work. The girls had a selection of high heels and the boys a selection of ties.

Each day the student employees clocked in and began the writing process. They worked on the POWERS writing process (Plan, Organize, Write, Edit, Rewrite and Share). They were given different ideas to write about each week such as: lost and found, sports, wildfires, animal emergencies. They finished the month with a mystery of “Who stole the cookies from the classroom?”

Police tape surrounded an area in the room, which contained many different clues as to who the bandit was. Mr. Winston Skinner from “The Newnan Times-Herald” also joined them for an in house field trip. He told the students about his job as a reporter and shared his writing tools with them.

The students have been very excited about this writing workshop and are so eager to come to “work” each day. Several boys wore their own ties to school and the girls dressed up in dresses to match their heels.

Each day they had to show their work and the “Boss” signed off on their timesheet. They were paid on Thursday is our pay day, and each student was paid for the days they worked.

Finally, at the end of the month, the students counted all of their pay. With it, they paid their bills: rent, groceries and gas, and thenwent shopping at our school Glant-Mart.
