Teacher in Focus: Josh Tate
by Celia Shortt
Josh Tate teaches music at Elm Street Elementary School in Newnan. This year is his seventh of teaching.
Why did you become a teacher?
I love kids, and I think the way to influence society the best is through children.
How long have been you a teacher?
This is my seventh year and all have of them have been at Elm Street.
What is your favorite part?
The “aha” moment for a student - when they get it and you see the pride in their eyes.
If you were not a teacher, what would you be doing?
It would have to be something involved with kids and fun. Being around kids is in my DNA.
Do you have a family?
I’m married with an almost two year old son.
What do you do when you are not teaching?
Running and a lot of training. I’m a marathon runner. If I’m not training, I try to spend as much time as possible with my family.
What is the one thing you want your students to learn?
Be awesome. Whatever you do, just be awesome. Take pride in what you do.
What is the best part about being at Elm Street?
We are a family. We’re not just a building, we’re a community. We lift each other up if we need help. We rely on each other. I look forward to the day when I get to teach my former students’ children.
